The Arthur Ballner Trophy

The CVSA Cup traces its roots to the beginning of the CVSA, with the first competition being held during the 1975-'76 season. The basic idea of the competition is to have all teams in the league participate in one inclusive tournament. It generally lasts from the fall to the spring, with games played intermittently during the regular season. The tournament gives an opportunity for lower division teams to test themselves against higher competition within the league.

The Cup is one of the four major titles awarded by the league in a calendar year. The others are the Premier Division Spring Champion, Premier Division Summer Champion, and Premier Division Fall Champion.

The trophy awarded to the winners is named for the late Arthur Ballner of Deutscher Sportclub. Mr. Ballner is one of the pioneers of adult amateur soccer in the Richmond area. In the late 1950's he led a group that started playing pickup soccer games near Byrd Airport, and became Deutscher Sportclub in 1960. Throughout the 1960's, he led the Deutscher Sportclub teams to play in Washington, D.C. leagues on weekends, as there weren't enough players to support a league in Richmond at the time. Their teams were good enough to win the D.C. Second Divison at one point. As the game grew in the Richmond area Mr. Ballner branched off and founded the Internationals Soccer Club, the precursor to the very first CVSA Champions in the 1975-'76 season, and winners of two of the first three CVSA Cups. Mr. Ballner passed in 1972, three years before the founding of the league, but his enthusiasm and love of the game laid the groundwork for what is now the CVSA.

The 2025-'26 CVSA Cup and Copa Bruce will be conducted in accordance with Article III.B of the Bylaws of the Central Virginia Soccer Association, and Article XIII.A.3 of the Constitution of the Central Virginia Soccer Association.

  • Any teams who forfeited out of the 2024-'25 Copa Bruce are ineligible for 2025-'26 cup competition.

The Copa Bruce is named for longtime CVSA President S. Bruce Williams, whose idea it was to give the lower division teams a legitimate chance in cup competition. Mr. Williams led the coalition of community, business, & municipal groups who developed the Bryan Park Soccer Complex in the mid-1990's, which the CVSA uses as their primary base of operations. Mr. Williams is finally retired, but his tenure with the Lions Soccer Club is well remembered.

Sporting 804 is the current holder of the CVSA Cup, winning the 2024-'25 tournament with a 2:1 victory over the Team 804 at the Longdale Soccer Complex on Saturday, June 7. For Sporting 804, it was their third CVSA Cup Championship, tying them with the Fan Rats & the X-Rams for fourth on the all-time list. For Team 804, it was a second consecutive finals defeat by a one-goal margin. Team 804 got on the score sheet early with a goal from Harrison Ivy in the 10th minute. Just prior to the interval Nick Surkamp received a nice ball over the top, beating the Team 804 goalkeeper for an easy finish, bringing the match to level terms. The score remained 1:1 for quite sometime until Jason Yeisley decided he wanted to get saucy with the Team 804 backline and pulled out a nice finish for the game winner.

Lionhearts FC, relative newcomers to the CVSA, is the current holder of the Copa Bruce, winning the 2024-'25 tournament with a 3:2 golden goal OT win against Screaming Eagles Masters. Staking a 2:0 lead with a brace from Taurus Manneh (15' & 68'), they were equaled by a brace from Brad Knisley of Screaming Eagles Masters, the equalizer coming in the 85th minute. Knotted at full time, a kick from the spot at the start of the second OT by Elhadj Barry  ended the match, giving the Lionhearts their first Copa Bruce championship.

For 2025-'26 the tentative date for the cup finals is Saturday, May 30, 2026. Plan your vacations accordingly.
